At the start of this documentary, which was started directly after April 25th, 1974, there is the color red and “Grândola, Vila Morena”, the hymn of the Carnation Revolution. The carnations in the gun barrels and buttonholes are also red, as is the sea of flags. Made by a collective, this film in the tradition of militant cinema links together a voiceover commentary, a look back at the history of the regime from 1926 until its fall, footage of the rally on May 1st with speeches against fascism and colonialism and street interviews conducted by Brazilian director Glauber Rocha. Recently released political prisoners and deserters also have their say. A documentary that celebrates freedom, full of revolutionary euphoria and hope for a new society. (bik)
